What You Need For A Hurricane

Hi Kidzdorm fans its that time of year again when mother nature is in charge and (Irene is roaming across the Caribbean and heading for the U.S.A) all we have to do is be prepared. Hurricane season is between June to November and anything can happen. We have to be organize and ready, we need to have our supplies bought for both  the home and the car. We usually  are prepare for the house but we totally forget that we need a supply kit for the car. If we are away from home and the storm hits we will still need the basic essentials of food, water, and battery operated flashlight.

First thing is to be prepared:

Have all the necessary supplies bought and put away so that no one will use it until it is truly needed. Such essentials as medical supplies, ensure there is at least 2 weeks worth along with mosquito repellent, batteries and if anyone suffers from asthma a week  supply of oxygen. Ensure you have non-perishable items and guys it does not have to be crackers and water only, for the kids buy chips, cookies and soda. Know where your first aid kit and candles are located and put them together also buy a pack of water purification tablets just  in case you run out of bottled water and have to start drinking tap water. Get a battery operated radio, phone charger and a can opener to open can food if power goes out.
Ensure you have a grill or gas stove and enough supply of charcoal, matches or lighters and a cylinder of gas.

Have a plan in place:

Have sufficient fuel for the car, although you may not be travelling much the car battery will be useful to charge flashlights, laptops, phones and to keep the kids in a cool environment when they become agitated with the heat.

Know where all the emergency shelters are and the different ways of getting there as well as register for the special need shelter prior to the start of the hurricane, call your local Red Cross office and find out the details.

Ensure you have enough water not just for drinking, but water for hygienic and sanitary purposes as well. Fill up containers, the tub and the washer, the water stored in these places can be used to flush, bathe and wash dishes.

It is also vital that we keep the kids entertained we know its a frightening time for an adult, but its terrifying for a child. Find all those board games, dominoes and books to distract them especially if there is no power.

Try to stay informed in whatever way you can via phone, laptops or radio. You want to know if there is any emergency evacuation or if they are just delivering water or ice to your area.

DO NOT PROCRASTINATE ( waste time) GET IT DONE, IF NOT ALL  AT LEAST HALF OF THESE SUGGESTION MUST BE IMPLEMENTED IN ORDER TO PREVENT  PANIC AND CHAOS.
